Five Fun Ways to Say Goodbye to Summer

*Words by guest writer Joanna Rentz

Though summer may be nearly over, there is still enough time for one last minute hot weather hurrah. Late summer get-togethers and excursions feel slightly more extraordinary, seeing that the long, warm days of summer will soon be getting chillier. So before the sun gives way to fog and rain - and you have to break out the sweaters and boots - say bon voyage to summer with one of these fun outdoor activities.

Take a weekend road trip.

Whether you travel hours away or stay close to home, a road trip is a fabulous way to experience different elements and explore new neighborhoods. Start planning by mapping out points of interest that you want to see, like the coast, a state park, or a museum. From there, begin to map out your route, locating various sites, hotels, or attractions along the way. Roadtrippers is a comprehensive tool for discovering unique areas or points of interest. Make a few playlists, pack some snacks, and you're ready to hit the road!

Go camping.

One of the best ways to connect with nature and to reconnect with yourself is to spend time outdoors. Go camping. Disconnect from everyday stresses and sleep under the stars. Breathe the fresh air. Take a hike. Leave your phone on airplane mode and let yourself be present in the moment. Being immersed in nature has many remarkable health benefits, so squeeze one last summer camping trip into your calendar.

Say yes to every opportunity to go swimming.

Be it a lake, ocean, or pool, take full advantage of the last few days of summer by going swimming every chance you get! Come winter you are going to wish you took that dare to swim in the ocean or had cannonballed off the dock. Summer is about having fun and being carefree, so seize every chance to feel lighthearted and joyous. I mean, have you ever been mad that you decided to go swimming? I haven't either.

Host a BBQ

A backyard BBQ is a quintessential summer activity. Hot dogs, veggie burgers, and a cooler full of drinks screams summer so invite your pals over for one last hurrah. If you have the room, set up a bocce ball court or a game of cornhole. Low on space? Break out a deck of cards. And for a fabulous cocktail recipe, check out these refreshing fruit concoctions.

Visit a national park

There are 58 national parks in the United States, spanning across 49 states. There is no better time to visit a national park than late summer or early fall when the crowds are smaller, and the foliage begins to turn color. The weather will be a little chillier in high altitudes, but if you pack accordingly, a late summer getaway to a national park will be undoubtedly striking and memorable. Plus, no traffic!
